Personally, before moving in to college, the app 'Snapchat' existed on my phone but I never used it because it wasn't 'normal' to have snapchat in college and my friends in high school never really had it. However, coming to college it is hard to even find one friend who doesn't use it. Its more common these days to say "Add me on Snapchat" than "Give me your number". YES! It is surprising to note the transition but at the same time its interesting to see how our generation is changing.
According to studies conducted by Mashable, 77% of College students use snapchat at least once a day and 23% of these students say Snapchating is easier than testing and help them build and sustain contacts with friends. Moreover, 37% of the students say it provides a forum for some of them to be creative that no other mobile app has allowed them to do. For them, Snapchat is a new form of communication, valued, new form of expression, more than just a picture. What's the most interesting part is now, college officials and universities are using it. Universities have taken notice of the Snapchat phenomenon and are beginning to use the social media platform for recruitment, advertising and community building!

But what about people outside college?
It is indeed true that when we say Snapchat ; the first audience that is targeted is college students. The popularity is significantly lower outside college. Why is this? The main reason is because snapchat would increase in popularity only when your other friends use Snapchat. In the adult population the number of people who use it are lower, thereby justifying it for its lower popularity. In addition, adults don't necessarily have time for investment in another for of social media that appeals relatively higher to GEN Y.
